HARTFORD, CONN. (JUNE 28, 2016) — Today, Mayor Luke Bronin joined fellow elected leaders from across Connecticut’s capital city in decrying a racist video that was created by radio personality Gary Craig and posted on the 96.5 TIC-FM Facebook page (link: The video features Mr. Craig attending the Hartford Latino fest, a multicultural celebration in Hartford that took place last weekend, making racist comments about others in attendance.
“Gary Craig's video is repulsive and bizarre,” said Mayor Bronin. “I was at the riverfront Saturday afternoon, and the festival was everything I love about our city: people of all different backgrounds coming together at our beautiful riverfront to celebrate the dance, music and food of one of our largest and most vibrant cultural communities here in Hartford. CBS Local Media, the owner of 96.5 TIC FM, should get this trash off of their website."
In addition to the Facebook post, the radio station website — — featured the video in a post titled, “Gary Craig: Accidental Tourist at Hartford Latino Fest” (link: ).
"The derogatory comments made by Mr. Craig were point blank disgusting,” said City Council President T.J. Clarke. "There is absolutely no way these comments can be justified. For anyone to mention they walked into some ‘parallel universe’ while people were celebrating their culture at last weeks, Latino Fest needs a quick reality check on how culturally diverse this city is. I expect a public apology from Mr. Craig and the management staff of the radio station to the City of Hartford and organizers and members of the Latino community.”
“His comments were completely insensitive and degrading to the Latino population in this City and State,” said City Councilman Julio A. Concepcion. "Whether made in jest or not, his racist undertones are absolutely inexcusable and should be condemned by his employer.”
“I’m appalled by this racist behavior,” said State Representative Angel Arce. “The radio station needs to apologize to the community and take this video down immediately.”



Hartford Youth Creating Safe Streets, Strong Neighborhoods
Hartford, Conn. (June 23, 2016) — Fulfilling a campaign pledge, Mayor Luke Bronin announced today that his administration has secured $2.2 million in private funding to launch the first phase of the Hartford Youth Service Corps. Five organizations have donated the overwhelming share of funding to the program: The Hartford, Barbara Dalio and the Dalio Foundation, Aetna Foundation, Travelers Foundation, and Newman’s Own Foundation. Various representatives from those organizations joined the Mayor for today’s announcement.  
“The single most powerful tool for building a better future for Hartford is to help give Hartford’s young people opportunities for meaningful employment,” said Mayor Bronin. “I believe that unemployment for young men and women in our cities is one of our greatest and most urgent challenges, and I’m incredibly grateful to our partners for stepping up in a huge way to meet that challenge. Giving young people a chance to earn a paycheck while contributing to their community is a powerful way to build safer, stronger neighborhoods.  Coupled with the $2 million youth employment grant, we secured from the federal Department of Labor, we’ve put together nearly $5 million to support job opportunities for Hartford’s young people.”
Youth employment is a top priority of Mayor Bronin’s administration. In response to Hartford’s youth unemployment crisis, Mayor Bronin had pledged during the first year of his new administration to partner with community stakeholders in connecting Hartford’s young people to part-time, yearlong employment. Youth Service Corps, set to launch this July, will provide Hartford’s opportunity youth — defined as out-of-school, out-of-work youth ages 16 to 24 — with an opportunity to earn a paycheck while strengthening neighborhoods. Mayor Bronin aims to expand the program to five hundred youth next year.
Beginning in July 2016, the Youth Service Corps will employ two hundred of Hartford's opportunity youth. Members will have yearlong, part-time employment with flexible scheduling, and they will engage in community service-based projects designed to impact Hartford neighborhoods visibly. Projects will address unmet needs in the city, such as blight remediation, home repair, and environmental stewardship. By completing these projects, Youth Service Corps Members will restore and protect Hartford’s natural, cultural, and historic resources and build safer, stronger neighborhoods.
Youth Service Corps' donors expressed enthusiasm while reflecting on their commitment to the program.

Youth Service Corps, funded entirely by private donations, will be led by the City of Hartford’s Department of Families, Children, Youth, and Recreation. Our Piece of the Pie (OPP) will serve as the implementation partner, providing full-time staff to develop and implement projects and manage Youth Service Corps member teams.  OPP will provide members with mentorship, assistance in building life skills, and support and employment services.  The City and OPP will work to ensure that Youth Service Corps boosts access to economic opportunity by serving as an on-ramp to workforce development programming, career-level professional placements, and permanent employment.

In addition to the $2.2 million raised in philanthropic donations, the Connecticut Department of Housing has approved the use of $1 million in funds from the Urban Revitalization Pilot Program grant, authorized by the State in 2012, for Youth Service Corps projects.  Youth Service Corps members, in collaboration with Rebuilding Together Hartford, will renovate between 10 and 20 properties within a designated neighborhood of the North Hartford Promise Zone. 

"The Department of Housing is excited to support the City's revitalization of these neighborhoods as part of its Urban Revitalization Pilot Program, which envisions a comprehensive and collaborative approach to strong, vibrant, and inclusive communities,” said Nick Lundgren, Deputy Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Housing.
On top of the philanthropic donations announced today, the City recently highlighted that Hartford secured a $2 million a federal grant for youth jobs. The grant will help provide 275 youth with summer and year-round job opportunities and exposure to career pathways for in-demand job sectors as part of Promise Zone Youth Employment for Success (Promise Zone YES!).

HARTFORD, CONN. (JUNE 22, 2016) - Today, Mayor Luke Bronin formally nominated Bonnie Malley to serve as the City of Hartford’s new Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Darrell Hill, to take on a new role as the City’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO).  Pending approval by the Court of Common Council, both Malley and Hill will serve in acting capacities beginning July 5th.
“I’m thrilled to make these announcements today,” said Mayor Bronin. “Bonnie and Darrell both bring tremendous talent and experience and have already been important members of our team, and I will be asking a lot from both of them as we work to get Hartford’s house in order.  I know that they both believe deeply in Hartford and in Hartford's future, and share my commitment to addressing our challenges openly and directly."

Before being nominated by Mayor Bronin to become the City’s new COO, Ms. Malley served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of The Phoenix Companies, Inc. In this position. Ms. Malley was responsible for all financial management and oversight as well as investor relations.
Before serving as the CFO for The Phoenix, Ms. Malley served as the company’s Chief Administrative Officer and was responsible for Human Resources, IT, and other administrative functions. A proud resident of Hartford, Ms. Malley is a member of the Bushnell Center for Performing Arts’ board of trustees and serves on the board of directors for the MetroHartford Alliance, the Connecticut Forum and the iQuilt Partnership, among others. She holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Western New England College.
"I am excited to begin officially working with Mayor Bronin and his team," said Ms. Malley. “I will be partnering with all areas of city government to ensure we are focused on addressing our challenges and executing on our priorities."
Mr. Hill, who serves as the COO for the City, is being nominated to take on a new CFO role. As CFO, he will be the head of finance for the City. Also, he will oversee both the Finance Department and the Office of Management, Budget & Grants (OMB). The OMB Director will report to the CFO rather than to the Chief Operating Officer.
Before joining the City of Hartford, Mr. Hill served the City of Norfolk, VA for five years. His positions in Norfolk included Director of Finance & Business Services and, subsequently, Assistant City Manager.
Mr. Hill was also a Senior Vice President with BB&T Capital Markets’ Public Finance Group and Executive Director of the Virginia Resources Authority, the state’s funding source for local government infrastructure financing. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Hampton University and is a member of the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) and the International City/County Management Association (ICMA).
"I look forward to the opportunity to work with Mayor Bronin, City Council, Treasurer Cloud and the residents and businesses of our Capital City with a focus on developing strategies and plans for implementation to address the systemic and institutional issues, problems and situations facing Hartford’s financial future,” said Mr. Hill.
