Mayor Segarra Reminds Hartford Residents to Take Precautions During the Excessive Heat

(July 5, 2013) – With temperatures expected to be in the mid 90’s for the July 4th Holiday weekend, Mayor Pedro E. Segarra is reminding residents to take precautions during the excessive heat.

“Even though we’ve seen hotter temperatures, the humidity level is high so everyone should take the necessary precautions to stay cool,” said Mayor Segarra. “I encourage everyone to check on their neighbors or friends, especially the elderly or those who may be more susceptible to the effects of the heat to make sure they are ok.”

Some helpful tips include:

  • Drink water regularly and often, avoid large amounts of caffeine and alcohol as it causes dehydration.
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, clothing.
  • Stay indoors as much as possible. Avoid the sun and use SPF of 30 more if you have to be outdoors.
  • Go somewhere to get relief from the heat such as libraries, malls, movie theaters, or places with air conditioning during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Never leave children or pets inside a closed vehicle. Do not leave pets outside for long periods of time.
  • Cover windows that get direct sunlight.
