(December 13, 2012) Mayor Pedro E. Segarra announced the appointment of Tiana V. Hercules, Esq. as the Special Assistant to the Mayor for coordinating and managing his Opportunities Hartford initiative. Opportunities Hartford is Mayor Segarra’s signature initiative designed to enhance and expand existing educational, employment and income opportunities in Connecticut’s Capital City.
First introduced as a concept in October 2010, Opportunities Hartford has been driven forward by a small task force appointed by the Mayor, and co-chaired by Dr. Jose Colon Rivas, the Director of the Department of Families, Children, Youth & Recreation and Jared Kupiec, his Chief of Staff, in collaboration with a Community Steering Committee made-up of two dozen community leaders representing all sectors of the community - - educators, employers, business organizations, residents, government, philanthropies, and human services providers.
The Community Steering Committee recently presented to the Mayor short-term, mid-term and long-term recommendations to improve community-wide results in the areas of education, job readiness/job creation/career advancement and family-sustaining income for Hartford’s families.
“Opportunities Hartford is now at the doorstep of implementation,” says Mayor Segarra. “Having a full-time staff member to oversee the program, someone who is adept at facilitating cooperation, coordination and commitment among all of the city’s diverse stakeholders, is essentially to the initiative's long-term success. I have no doubt that Tiana is the person best equipped to lead this project forward.”
Ms. Hercules previously served as an attorney with the Center for Medicare Advocacy in Mansfield. She holds an undergraduate degree in Human Relations and Government from Connecticut College, a Juris Doctor and M.B.A. from UConn. She resides in Hartford with her husband and two young boys who attend local public schools.
