(October 15, 2012) – Today Mayor Pedro E. Segarra and Chief Edward Casares, Jr. announced that Hartford Fire Department firefighters and staff will be wearing pink shirts for the remainder of the month in support for the many men and women that have been affected by cancer.
“As firefighters and first responders, we see the direct and indirect suffering that cancer causes for individuals who are diagnosed and their families. Occasionally, the disease strikes one of our own. Firefighters are four times more susceptible to several forms of cancer due to various exposures they face. By this effort, the City of Hartford and the many men and women who sacrifice on behalf of our residents, the Mayor and I hope to bring about a heightened level of awareness, promote early detection as well as give back to our community,” said Fire Chief Casares.
The Hartford Fire Department will also be taking part in the MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER 5K Walk at Bushnell Park on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at 9AM. Residents are encouraged to come and join our city’s bravest as “We Walk as One”. Those wishing to make a donation should visit www.Main.ACSevents.org/goto/HARTFORDFIREDEPARTMENT
