(June 25, 2013) – Mayor Pedro E. Segarra today made the following statement regarding the U.S. Supreme Court decision striking down the Defense of Marriage Act:
“I am extremely pleased the Supreme Court has invalidated DOMA on equal protection grounds, recognizing that all married couples—regardless of sex—are entitled to the same set of rights. This is a tremendous step forward for marriage equality, and for equal rights as a whole. As the first elected mayor of a major US city in a legally-recognized, same-sex marriage, this issue strikes particularly close to home.
It is my hope that moving forward, this ruling will prompt many more states to follow Connecticut's example, and offer the legal protections of marriage to all citizens. Even after today's ruling upholding the right of same-sex couples to marry in California, less than a third of the US population lives in states where same-sex marriage is recognized."
