Arrest in New Years Day Homicide

On Friday, January 1, 2016, at approximately 12:09am, the Hartford Police Department received several 911 calls of a person stabbed and bleeding at 41 Francis Avenue. On arrival, a male victim was located suffering from a stab wound to his abdomen and chest area. HPD Officers provided first aid. EMS arrived on scene and transported the victim to Hartford Hospital where he was subsequently pronounced deceased at 1:11am by the attending physician. A crime scene was immediately established and secured by the HPD patrol officers on scene. The HPD Major Crimes Division and HPD Crime Scene Division arrived and assumed the investigation. Several witnesses were immediately identified and interviewed. As a result, HPD Major Crimes Detectives were able to develop strong suspect information shortly after this homicide occurred. On Monday, January 4, 2016 an arrest warrant was drafted and submitted to a Judge of the GA14 Hartford Superior Court. The arrest warrant was approved and signed. The arrest warrant charged the accused, Tequile Walwyn (DOB 12/30/1996), with one count of Murder in violation of Connecticut General Statute 53a-54a. There is a $250,000 dollar Judge Set Bond attached to the warrant, cash or surety. The accused turned himself in at Hartford Police headquarters today, January 4, 2016 at approximately 11:00am after learning the police had a warrant for his arrest. The accused was taken into custody by HPD Major Crimes detectives without incident and immediately transferred to Major Crimes to be debriefed. The accused is scheduled to be arraigned in Hartford Superior Court located at 101 Lafayette Street in Hartford on January 5, 2016. Details of the arrest will be available at arraignment.

This investigation was a collaborative effort with of the Hartford Police Department's Major Crimes Division, the HPD Crime Scene Division, the Hartford Shooting Task Force, and the Hartford States Attorney's Office.

HARTFORD POLICE TO CONDUCT DUI ENFORCEMENT CHECKPOINT


(Hartford, CT.) – The Hartford Police Department Traffic Division will conduct a DUI Enforcement Checkpoint on Thursday, December 17, 2015, from 5:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., in the area of 175 New Britain Avenue.

This checkpoint is part of the Hartford Police Department's ongoing expanded DUI enforcement program supervised by the HPD's Traffic Division and funded through a grant from the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation DUI Enforcement Program.

Person of Interest in Homestead Hit & Run

On November 23, 2015 at 4:41 p.m. Hartford Police Department Patrol Officers responded to the area of 333 Homestead Ave on a report of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle. Upon arrival, officers found a a male lying in the road across the eastbound lane of Homestead Ave. A witness to the incident stated he was traveling east on Homestead Ave and observed the pedestrian cross in a clearly marked pedestrian crosswalk in front of 333 Homestead Ave. The witness reports that the pedestrian attempting to cross from the south sidewalk to the north sidewalk was struck by the evading vehicle, became airborne and landed approximately 150 Ft from point of impact. The evading vehicle was then observed continuing east on Homestead Ave without stopping.
The witness was able to capture a picture of the rear of the evading vehicle, identifying the vehicle as a Chrysler, Town and Country van, color tan and bearing a CT marker plate of 395-YMM. Although a marker plate was captured, unfortunately the marker plate is a misused plate with no information found.

Video surveillance capturing the incident was obtained from an exterior camera attached to the Salvation Army building, located at 333 Homestead Ave. The video surveillance shows the initial vehicle impact with the pedestrian, the evading vehicle pulling into a parking lot a short distance from the initial impact, then exiting the lot and continuing east on Homestead Ave and out of camera visibility.
The pedestrian suffers from broken legs, arms and a head injury. He is being treated at St. Francis Hospital where the struck pedestrian had been placed in a medically induced coma. The attending physician advised HPD officers that the pedestrian's injuries no longer appear to be life threatening.

During the course of the investigation, and with several leads from the public, a person of interest has been identified as Ralph McGriff, 52, of Hartford, CT. Mcgriff is wanted for questioning for an evading/pedestrian automobile accident in the area of 333 Homestead Ave in Hartford, CT. Ralph McGriff is known to frequent the area of 560 Park Street in Hartford and has an extensive criminal history.

The Hartford Police asks anyone who knows any information about the location of Ralph McGriff to contact the Hartford Police Department, Lt. Brandon O'Brien at (860-757-4089). Anonymous tips can be submitted using this link. This is still an ongoing and active investigation and information regarding the operator of the evading vehicle or the location of the vehicle should contact the Hartford Police Department.
