Women, Infant and Children (WIC)

What is WIC?

Special Supplemental Nutrition Program that serves to safeguard the health of low-income women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at nutritional risk.


Women, Infant and ChildrenWho is eligible?

  • Pregnant women (through pregnancy and up to 6 weeks after birth or after pregnancy ends).
  • Breastfeeding women (up to infant's 1st birthday).
  • Non-breastfeeding postpartum women (up to 6 months after the birth of an infant or after pregnancy ends).
  • Infants (up to 1st birthday). WIC serves 45 percent of all infants born in the United States.
  • Children up to their 5th birthday (Fathers, grandparents, foster parents or other guardians may apply for WIC for their children).
  • Must be income eligible. Wages or other income must be within the income guidelines set by the State of Connecticut WIC Program.

Call the Hartford WIC office at (860) 757-4780 or Santa Marquez Center at (860) 757-4860 to make an appointment. They will tell you what you need to bring to your appointment.


What does WIC Offer?

WIC provides nutritional assessment and education, referrals to health care and social services, breastfeeding education and support and nutritious foods to supplement diets.

Women, Infant and ChildrenNutrition Assessment and Education: WIC participants are offered individual nutrition counseling and nutrition classes.

Referrals to Health and other Social Services: As a gateway to health care WIC prides itself in giving appropriate referrals to a variety of services such as SNAP, Head Start, medical and dental services, substance abuse programs, child care and much more.

Breastfeeding Promotion and Support: Encouragement, advice and instruction on nursing babies are available to all participants.

Women, Infant and ChildrenNutritious Foods: Once you are determined to be eligible for the WIC program; you will receive vouchers for nutritious foods for diet supplementation. These vouchers can be used at your local grocery store or pharmacy. WIC foods include infant cereal, baby food; iron fortified adult cereal, fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs milk, cheese, peanut butter, dried and canned beans/peas, canned fish whole grains and more.
