Councilman Alexander Aponte was born in New Britain, Connecticut and attended local schools there. He graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts and received his law degree from Columbia University School of Law in New York City. During the course of his legal career Councilman Aponte has worked in private law firms as well as served as Corporation Counsel for the City of New Britain and the City of Hartford. Currently he is the managing partner of the Law Offices of Alexander Aponte.
Larry Deutsch, MD, MPH is a pediatrician and City Council member who like many others in our City has immigrated to Hartford from somewhere else (Brooklyn, New York). His present involvement in public affairs dates back to childhood memories of community activities for civil rights and against unnecessary wars. Years ago (for those too young to remember) that meant marching outside Woolworth stores ('they segregate down South, we picket up North'), boycotting grapes to support farm workers and unions, and rallying to bring soldiers home from Vietnam.
Elected to his first term on City Council in 2011, David MacDonald previously served eight (8) years on the Hartford Board of Education and from February 2011 to January 2012 as its Chairman. David was a leader and strong advocate for the district's reform efforts during his tenure on the Board, helping to fulfill the promise of the district's first attempt at reform in the mid-1990's. David is also a 10 year member of the Hartford Democratic Town Committee representing the 6th Assembly District.
Born and raised in Hartford, Councilman Kyle Anderson is no stranger to our community. Kyle has spent his life engaging with the people of our city as a community activist, small business owner, and now a member of the Court of Common Council. The son of Wilfred Anderson, Jr. and Councilwoman Jacqueline Anderson, public service is in his blood.
Councilman Raúl De Jesús, Jr. is a lifelong Hartford resident and homeowner in Parkville, where he lives with his wife and family. Born, raised, and educated in the City he loves, he understands the issues that affect Hartford residents because he has experienced them first-hand. Raised in public housing at the now-closed Charter Oak Terrace, he attended eight Hartford Public Schools: Mary Hooker, Burns, M.D. Fox, Parkville, South Middle, Quirk, Bulkeley, and Hartford Public. From the age of ten, he moved between jobs from bagging groceries to washing windows and selling candy bars to support his family of nine.
Attorney Jennings acquired a Baccalaureate of Science in Secondary Education with a concentration in Urban Affairs. She received her Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Connecticut Law School in Hartford. Ms. Jennings practices in the areas of Human Rights Litigation, Environmental Justice and Constitutional Law. Ms. Jennings has been an entrepreneur since 1976, specializing in state, municipal and corporate management and personnel training.
Councilman Kenneth H. Kennedy, Jr. (D) was elected to office on November 6, 2001 and re-elected on November 4, 2003 receiving the most votes of any member of the City Council. Prior to election, Councilman Kennedy served on the Executive Committee of the Hartford Democratic Town Committee from March 1995 to March 2002. In 1999, he was appointed to a five (5) year term on both the Hartford Redevelopment Agency and the Hartford Economic Development Commission.
An Inter-American University of Theology and Hartford High School graduate, born and raised in Hartford, currently works for Catholic Charities as a Fatherhood Specialist – providing Healthy Marriage support, Father involvement curriculum, and job search services. Joel served four years of distinguished active service in the U. S. Marine Corps. He serves on the Hartford Hospital Pastoral Services Advisory Committee and the Board of Directors for the African Caribbean American Parents of Children with Disabilities (AFCAMP). Joel is an active member of the Interfaith Fellowship for Universal Health Care, a group of religious leaders who believe in a health care system that leaves no one out. He lives on Exeter Street with his wife Karla and their two daughters.
